Wednesday morning saw the State Border Guard Service (SBGS) commander, Vainius Butinas, coming to a hospital in Klaipėda to visit two SBGS officials who had been shot at the border with Russia.
Preliminarily, a man who had been approached for detention by State Border Guard Service (SBGS) officials opened fire injuring two SBGS staff, at the border with Russia Wednesday night. The gunman was shot dead during the incident.
Border guards noted 15- and 43-percent growth in the number of unauthorised border crossings and border offenders in 2009, compared to those in 2008, respectively. SBGS officers recorded 395 unauthorised border crossings in 2009 which is 15 percent more than the numbers in 2008 when 343 such attempts were recorded.
